The knee mills advantages of being open (faster setups) and more flexible (tilting and nodding head means less fancy fixtures are required) can out weight the VMC's machining performance advantages for this kind of work. In my case I do mostly prototypes and one-offs with some small production runs on my CNC knee mill.

I am certain that my variable speed head is failing. It sounds like the proverbial box of bolts in a washing machine on a spin cycle in the high gear and higher speeds, and in low gear, I can't run above 200 RPM since the noise is so loud that it stops conversation in the shop (tho' the guy diving for cover was a little over the top!).
